In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions however the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not certain what to do, as i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines requires to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.
Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly in the case of an Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is an option.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems in your car. It is a crucial part of your
audi etron key's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is spinning. If the sensor fails, it can affect the performance of the transmission and the rest of the car's components.
The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This is a common feature across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find them in wrecking yards.
